As you know, tips are very easy, to the point, get on with life, no bushes to beat time savers. Even the professionals stumble every once in a while on a startling, eye widening trick. Try this if you haven’t yet. When trying to select an object (any non transparent pixels) on a transparent layer just hold the Control key (PC) or the Command key (Mac) while you single click on the layer thumbnail like in the picture below. You will notice it (Photoshop) will then automagically select any of the pixels on the transparent layer.. did I just say that?. Just give it a go. Remember all these little seconds saved up in your life give you more time to learn and grow. They all add up!

You have to [Ctrl]+click inside the “Layer Thumbnail” to make this work. If you [Ctrl]+click outside the thumbnail, it will let you highlight multiple layers.
Nice!!! Thanks… that’s exactly what I was looking for!! :)
Hmmm.. Have you tried it? It does work perfectly on transparent layers as I say. The only time it may seem a bit off is if you are trying to select gradients. It will only select with about a 50% tolerance. But all you have to do is do as I say in the post, then use “refine edge” and move the Contract/Expand slider to +100%. Solid objects will be completey selected even if there are multiple objects on the same transparent layer.
I dont think this post is completely true. Howerver, it has a lot of good ideas. Thank you
